Appearance

Noteworthy here is the plumage color, which in males is mainly black with white feather tips. Females are predominantly brown and otherwise less conspicuous than their male counterparts. Furthermore, the difference in size should be mentioned; an ostrich can grow up to 250 centimeters tall, while females only reach 175 to 190 centimeters. Another well-known feature of the ostrich is its relatively high running speed, which can reach up to 50 km/h. The animal is capable of maintaining this pace for quite some time, which is particularly useful when fleeing from predators or searching for food.

Distribution of the Ostrich in Africa

This stork-like bird can mainly be found in East and Southern Africa, but these animals also inhabit areas south of the Sahara up to Central Africa. They primarily inhabit open landscapes such as grasslands, savannas, and deserts. This is mainly due to their fast forward movement, which is hindered by too many trees and tall grass. Although there are ostriches that venture into areas with denser vegetation, they only stay there for foraging. Another important factor in the habitat of these birds is proximity to water, as the animals have a high fluid requirement.

Diet

The diet of the ostrich consists mainly of plant-based food. However, if no other food is available or the opportunity arises, insects or similar small animals are also eaten. The plant-based diet includes grasses and herbs, as well as flowers, fruits, and seeds, depending on the habitat.
