Appearance

Many animals have adapted to the given conditions over time. The Monteiro Toko bird lives in the dry thorn fields and savannas of South Africa. It is mainly found in southwestern Angola and northwestern Namibia.

The medium-sized bird is classified as a hornbill due to its curved red beak and the ridge on it. The Monteiro Toko has a multicolored plumage. In contrast to the short white belly feathers, the ten long tail feathers are black with white edges. The back is also black, as are the eyes. The broad, short wings are covered with light spots. In birds up to 58 cm in size, the females are smaller. Another distinguishing feature is that the females have turquoise facial skin.

Diet

It is not an omnivore, but feeds on arthropods such as lizards and insects. Like other hornbill species, it nests in tree hollows. Since the female does not leave the nest during the 45-day breeding period, the male is responsible for providing food.

Behavior

The Monteiro Toko is generally a very shy bird. Nevertheless, it can be observed at the Rustig Toko Lodge in Namibia. Over the years, it has become accustomed to humans who feed it daily, allowing it to be observed from a short distance, which would not be possible in the wild.
