Martial Eagle

Appearance

A feature typical of eagles is their yellow eyes, which enable the bird to spot prey even from a great distance. When it comes to the physical measurements of martial eagles, it should be noted that the females are usually larger than the males. On average, the birds are 75 to 100 centimeters long and have a wingspan ranging from 188 to 227 centimeters. The body weight is between 3.5 and 7.5 kilograms, depending on sex and size.

Diet

What is the diet of martial eagles? Above all, smaller to medium-sized mammals living on the ground are preferred as food. However, birds and insects are also not spurned by the eagles if they present themselves as prey.

Lifestyle

Where do martial eagles mainly live and what is their lifestyle? These eagles can be found almost throughout Africa south of the Sahara, although they tend to avoid forested regions. This is mainly because the eagle needs an open area for hunting where it can safely catch its prey. Although the bird has no real natural enemies, it is threatened. This is mainly due to humans, who kill the eagle as soon as it comes too close to farms or settlements. These people fear that the bird of prey will see their young sheep as prey, which is rarely the case. Martial eagles live in pairs, occupying a territory that can be up to 250 square kilometers in size. In doing so, a female and a male remain together for their entire lives.
