Lifestyle
Here, the population of animals is relatively small, which is mainly due to the fact that this falcon is hunted by humans on the one hand, but also forced by climatic changes to find a new habitat. Lanner falcons can often be found in open terrain, where there are only a few trees or bushes. Particularly popular are stone or semi-deserts that offer steep mountains.
Appearance
The lanner falcon has some similarities to a peregrine falcon, with the difference mainly being in the narrow tail and the flight style. The falcon can reach a wingspan of up to 110 centimeters, with the males being smaller than the females. Another feature is their feathers, which are brown to reddish-brown on the upper side. On the underside, the animal is lighter, but has dark spots on the chest and undersides of the wings.
The beak and the long toes are a strong yellow, ending in a black beak tip or long claws. Finally, the particularly striking flight should be mentioned as a characteristic of lanner falcons. They have a lower wing beat frequency than other falcon species, but can also reach high speeds, which is particularly used when hunting.
Food and Breeding of the Lanner Falcon
These are used by the lanner falcon as a breeding site to safely raise their young. In rare cases, the animals also occur on coastal cliffs. The lanner falcon lives with a fixed partner, hunting together and raising the young. Preferred prey includes small birds, which are simply grabbed from the air. However, if no other food source is available, the animals also hunt rabbits, lizards, rats or even beetles.
