Kirkdikdik
The Kirkdikdik is a very special antelope species in Africa, particularly notable for its trunk-like nose and very small body size.
Habitat
An average antelope of this species weighs only 6 kilograms and stands 30 centimeters tall. The size of the Kirk dik-dik is mainly due to its habitat, which is in dense vegetation where a large body size would be a hindrance. However, there are also Kirk dik-dik groups that live in the barren areas in the south of Africa. The main habitat of this animal, however, is central and northern Namibia, where there are many plants and bushes from which the antelope can feed.
This is where the characteristic trunk comes into play, which helps to select and eat plant parts precisely. The second reason for the nose shape is that the animals can simply cool their blood by increasing the blood flow to the nasal mucous membranes. Food is usually sought during the day, avoiding high temperatures when the animals prefer to retreat into the shade of bushes.
Social Behavior
What is the social behavior of the Kirk dik-dik? This antelope species lives with a fixed partner in a territory that is defended against rivals. This also applies to male offspring, which must find their own area once they reach sexual maturity. It is often the case that young males look for their own territory and compete for a mate even before reaching sexual maturity. The search can sometimes take several weeks, during which time the animals travel long distances.
Special Feature
Since Kirk dik-diks are such small African mammals, they are also easy prey for predators. For this reason, they have developed a special defense method in which they remain motionless when in danger. If the predator has still noticed them, the animals flee and look for good cover, where they then remain completely still again. Due to their fur, which is perfectly adapted to their habitat, it is much harder to spot the animals.
