Appearance

These gallinaceous birds are predominantly found in the savanna, but they are also often found in forested areas. They have also been domesticated, as they are very docile.

In terms of appearance, the chicken is very small, has short wings, yet stronger legs and a very small head. The chicken's plumage is black to rather grey in color. Different species of guinea fowl also have a white chest and the beak is somewhat curved towards the ground. One could almost call this type of bird a pheasant, as they have a somewhat pheasant-like posture.

Behavior

The bird species are widespread in a variety of habitats. These bird genera can also be encountered in the Caribbean or the Arabian Peninsula. They mainly live in open landscapes, but can also be found in areas with forests and meadows. There, the chickens can also protect themselves from danger. They are also ground dwellers that search for food there. They are usually active in the evening and at night, but rest during the hot midday hours.

Diet

The guinea fowl feeds not only on animal, but also on plant-based food. Roots or waste that monkeys drop are gladly collected by gallinaceous birds. The birds' reproduction is influenced by the season and there are often many fights between the males. To protect the eggs well, a nest in the form of a pit is laid out and the female lines it with plenty of grass and leaves.
