These cannot be assigned to any classical religion. A widespread, mixed form of religion is syncretism.

Africa, the land of mixed religions

This involves a mixture of Christianity and/or Islam and a traditional African form of religion. Sometimes traditions from Christianity are also mixed with Islam, so in some villages in Africa rosaries are used for prayer, while at the same time the direction of prayer is oriented towards Mecca. All these mixtures are grouped under the term syncretism.

Combinations of traditional African religions are also referred to as syncretism

The best-known forms of syncretic religion include the mixtures with Christianity or Islam mentioned above, but also mixtures of traditional African religions. There are numerous forms, but the best known are Nkabah and Mami Wata. These forms of religion are particularly common in West Africa, but are also often part of the rituals of various tribes in Africa. There are even different forms of syncretism practiced in America; these were brought to the country and became known through the slave trade.

Syncretism is largely based on belief in angels

In Christianity and Islam, God is the focus of faith, but a different god is worshipped depending on the religious group. In syncretism, faith tends more towards angels; people’s lives are strongly dominated by belief in angels, they believe in guardian angels and in the guidance of life by angels. The archangel Michael is regarded as the angel to be venerated; he is a central figure in the faith of many syncretic religions. Depending on the region and combination of religions, different rituals are integrated into the practice of the religion, for example in some regions prayers are only performed in white garments.

Syncretism unites religious contradictions into a new unity

The special thing about syncretism in Africa is the unification of several faiths and religions into a new form of belief. This religion came into fashion through a young girl who believed she had received a message from an angel instructing her to found a new religion. The intense belief in angels within the framework of syncretism may possibly be based on this earlier experience of the young woman. Spirits also play a major role in syncretism; depending on the region of Africa and the tribe, people believe in personal guardian angels or personal spirits that accompany the believer on the path of life.
