They were driven out of other countries such as Spain and Portugal.

The Jewish faith is only sporadically present in Africa

Despite immigration, the Jewish faith did not take hold as strongly as, for example, Christianity or Islam. The few Jews present in Africa do not adhere to classical Jewish beliefs but are rather entirely non-religious or practice a very unique form of religion similar to Judaism.

Most Jews in Africa live in the southern regions

While only a few Jews remain in the northern and western parts of Africa, some Jewish people live in the southern part of the continent. Overall, about 1–2 percent of Africa’s population are practicing Jews, many of whom have immigrated from Israel, Spain, and other countries. Africans view Judaism as a cultural enrichment, and the country has been strongly shaped by Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and other religions.

Tribes and ethnic groups practice religions similar to Judaism

Africa is a continent with many indigenous peoples, tribes, and groups, all of which have their own beliefs and traditional African religions. Many of these belief systems closely resemble Judaism and are therefore associated with the Jewish faith. It is difficult to determine how many followers actually adhere to the classical form of Judaism. Judaism itself is considered both a religion and a people. However, it is now much more than just the inhabitants of Israel who have embraced Judaism. Due to the persecution of Jews in Germany and their expulsion from many countries, the number of believers has significantly declined. In Africa, however, there was little hostility or expulsion, allowing the so-called "Black" Jews to feel at home there.

Judaism as the basis for many syncretic religions

Syncretism is the correct term for mixed religions and the blending of different faiths. While syncretism typically does not involve a mix of Jewish and other belief systems, there are religions in Africa that have developed from Judaism combined with other forms of religion. Conventional Judaism is rarely practiced; instead, variations and subtypes are almost always found in Africa. Some Africans undergo initiation into the original form of Judaism to practice a pure version of the faith.
