Kikuyu
Independence struggle
In the independence struggle against British colonial rule in the 1950s, the Kikuyu were superior. They also dominated in independent Kenya in important positions in politics and the economy. This has led to unrest and conflicts very often in recent decades.
The population figures of the Kikuyu already amounted to about twenty percent of Kenya's total population by the end of the colonial era.
The new elites of Kenya
Significant parts of the large estates were simply taken over by the new elite after independence, without regard for those who had lost everything in the war and had nothing left. They were allocated land or former European large farms in remote areas.
Most Kikuyu today are engaged in agriculture in Kenya's highland regions or work as craftsmen. Politics and the economy are still dominated by the Kikuyu. Some famous statesmen, writers and even the famous Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Muta Matahari are from the Kikuyu people.
