Horse breeding and trade in the Sahara

Since they had chariots, they were able to subjugate surrounding peoples and seize power. There are still various drawings on the rock walls in the Sahara today. Very productive trade was also carried out in the Mediterranean coastal region. The Garamantes traded in gemstones, salts or animals. The most important material in trade was precious ivory.

History

The kingdom of the Garamantes seems to have existed until the 7th century. Towards the end of the 6th century AD, they then converted to the Christian faith and only fell victim to the advances of the Muslim Arabs in Fessan and in the first half of the 7th century AD the last ruler of Garama was deposed. The Tuareg are also the descendants of the Garamantes today.
