Majority lives in Angola

After a rebellion, in the early sixties, hundreds of thousands of Bakongo fled to the Congo in the city of Kinshasa. After gaining independence, many returned to Angola. Today, the total number of the Bakongo people is more than 5 million people.

Way of life

In the past, the Bakongo mainly practiced farming and worked as forest planters. Over the years, many of the former farmers have migrated to the cities and work in all kinds of professions. Many are also active as traders. The majority of the Bakongo are Christians. The vast majority are Catholics and Baptists. However, over the decades, many small religious communities and revival churches have been founded, to which a smaller part of the Bakongo belongs.
