Historical ethnic group in West Africa

It is possible that this location was settled very early. The Bainounka were also encountered in the coastal region of Senegal. A mixing of peoples occurred about 200 years ago. The Bainounka mixed with the Mandinka and the Manjago, and since it cannot be determined exactly which inhabitants were from the Bainounka tribe, they are no longer counted today as an independent ethnic group.

Little information about the culture

There is very little to report about the Bainounka because in the West African state of Gambia, there has been a mixing of different tribes. The city of Brikama is the second largest metropolis in Gambia and is said to have received its name from the Bainounka. The translation is "the women's city". In the past, female rulers had their seat of government here under the old matriarchal social order.
