Tsavo National Park: Two wilderness areas between Nairobi and the coast

The Tsavo National Park is Kenya’s largest protected area, covering around 22,800 km². It is divided into two main sections: Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Both parks offer diverse landscapes, wildlife encounters, and infrastructure – ideal for a combination of safari and beach holiday.

Tsavo East: Vast savannas and the legendary red elephants

Tsavo East lies in the eastern part of the park and is known for its extensive, dry savannas, acacia forests, and the distinctive red soils that give the park its name. Here, large elephant herds live, whose skin takes on a reddish hue due to the mineral-rich dust.

Visitors will find a diverse wildlife here, including lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and numerous bird species. Particularly worth seeing are:

  • Galana River: Lifeline for elephants, hippos, and crocodiles.
  • Yatta Plateau: One of the world’s longest lava plateaus, ideal for hiking.
  • Lugard Falls: Waterfalls on the Galana River with spectacular rock formations.

The infrastructure in Tsavo East is less touristy than in Tsavo West, guaranteeing peace and untouched nature. Accommodation options range from simple lodges to luxury camps.

Tsavo West: Volcanic landscapes and hidden water worlds

Tsavo West lies in the western part of the park and is characterized by volcanic landscapes, deep gorges, and green oases. Here, the Chyulu Hills and the Mzima Springs dominate – one of Kenya’s most important freshwater reservoirs.

Wildlife viewing is particularly intense here, as many animals gather at the few watering holes. Highlights include:

  • Mzima Springs: Crystal-clear spring water where hippos and crocodiles live. Underwater viewing is possible.
  • Shetani Lava Flows: Black lava flows from the Chyulu Volcano, creating a surreal atmosphere.
  • Ngulia Rhododendron Forest: Unique vegetation and rare bird species.

Tsavo West is better developed and offers a wider range of lodges, including high-quality safari camps with views of the savanna.

Combination trip: Safari and beach in one tour

The Tsavo National Park is strategically located between Nairobi (approx. 4–5 hours’ drive) and the Kenyan coast (e.g. Mombasa, approx. 5–6 hours). This location makes it the ideal stopover for a combination trip of safari and beach.

Sample route:

  • Days 1–3: Arrival in Nairobi, transfer to Tsavo East or West, first safari tours.
  • Days 4–6: Continue to the coast (e.g. Diani Beach or Watamu) for relaxation and snorkeling.
  • Days 7–10: Optional return trip via other national parks such as Amboseli or Tsavo West.

The connection to Nairobi and the coast is well developed, so self-drivers can also reach the park. Alternatively, many tour operators offer guided safaris with transfers.

Best travel time and practical tips

The dry season from June to October and January to February is ideal for safaris, as the animals concentrate around waterholes. In the rainy season (March–May, November), the landscape is green, but some roads may become impassable.

Important notes:

  • Entry: Kenya visa required (e-visa or on arrival).
  • Health: Malaria prophylaxis recommended, check vaccinations.
  • Accommodation: Book early, especially during peak season (July–September).
  • Guides: In Tsavo East and West, guided tours are advisable to discover animals and hidden spots.

Conclusion: Why Tsavo is a must for safari fans

The Tsavo National Park combines wild, untouched nature, fascinating wildlife encounters – including the famous red elephants – and a perfect location for combination trips. Whether as a standalone destination or part of a larger Kenya round trip: Tsavo East and West offer unforgettable impressions off the beaten tourist track.
