Surveys in Africa

Partially, these are still active, or not completely extinct. That is why people living at the foot of a volcano are in great danger. They have to flee to neighboring countries during an eruption to survive. Among the highest mountains in Africa is the Kilimanjaro, which is located in the northeast of Tanzania. Larger than this is the Kibo, which towers above the Kilimanjaro. The snow-covered summit of the Kibo, Uhuru Peak, is world-famous. If you want to climb the highest mountains in Africa, you need very good sure-footedness, as the paths are very steep and rugged. The Meru is also one of the highest elevations on the African continent. If you plan to climb the Kilimanjaro, you should first practice on the Meru to learn good breathing techniques and sure-footedness. Almost every region of the African Rift Valley shows elevations caused by the plate movements of the continental plate.

Central Kenya and Rainforest

The mountain giants Batian and Nelion are located in the Mount Kenya Massif in central Kenya. There are seven other mountain elevations in this region, which are also represented in the central highlands. The oldest elevation and thus also a volcanic massif is the Elgon, which extends over Kenya and Uganda. To the west of this is the Ruwenzori Mountains with a glaciated and mystical mountain range. This is also where the mountain gorillas live, which can still be found in the wild. If you are looking for the border between Uganda and Congo, you will find it at the summit of Margherita Peak. The famous rainforest of the mountain gorillas is also located here, between the border areas of Rwanda, Congo and the region Uganda. In the Ethiopian Highlands, there are also many mountains over 4,000 meters, which extend over Abyssinia: the highest mountain there is Ras Dashen Terara. In the Atlas Mountains, which lie on the Moroccan border, the high Toubkal is recorded. It is very easy to climb and is also considered a test mountain by mountaineers.

Conditions and Development

On the highest mountains of Africa, you can find very lush vegetation that has developed over many years. Rare animals hide in the rainforest or the thickets in the mountains. Since most of the mountains are of volcanic origin, the animal species living there are also very endangered. The highest mountains in Africa vary greatly in height and shape. There are only three mountains that are covered with snow and glaciers. Differences in altitude can make climbing difficult and breathing apparatus may be necessary. The southwestern side of Africa and its high mountains belong to the rainiest region on earth. There is almost continuous rainfall there, and the fauna and flora have adapted optimally to the given circumstances.
