Culture in Africa

Music, art and architecture.

The African culture is very diverse

This is particularly expressed in African music and the almost infinitely varied African dances. However, one should not imagine African culture as something uniform. Africa is a vast continent and so each region has its own traditions and cultural peculiarities. For example, the North African countries such as Morocco, Tunisia or Algeria are culturally very close to the Arab world. Although in the 1960s the Pan-African movement tried to portray Africa as a continent based on a uniform culture, this was not successful.

Diverse forms of culture

The colonial era destroyed many of Africa's cultural traditions and it took a long time for independent cultural landscapes to develop again in Africa. Today, there is a rich culture that tries to combine tradition and modernity. African literature is often written in English or French and is thus accessible to a wide audience outside Africa in its original language. Today, one can see the quality of contemporary African art in galleries all over the world. And theatre has also become an increasingly popular art form in Africa since the 1980s as a means of expression.
