Somalia, officially the Federal Republic of Somalia, is located in the Horn of Africa. With a total area of 637,657 square kilometers, the country is home to between 7.5 and over 12 million inhabitants. The capital and largest city of Somalia is Mogadishu, with around 700,000 residents.
However, population figures for Somalia can only be estimated, as the country has not conducted a census and the population has continued to change. The majority of the country’s inhabitants belong to the Somali people. In addition, Somalia’s population is composed of various clans, the most important of which include the Hawiye, Darod, Digil-Mirifle, Isaaq, and Dir. Somalia also has three different languages of trade and education: Arabic, Italian, and English. Somali, however, is the country’s official administrative language.
Sights in Somalia
Mogadishu, the country’s capital, boasts a wealth of cultural attractions. These include the Arba-Rucun Mosque, dating back to 1269, and the Garesa Palace from the 19th century, which houses a large national museum. Other highlights of the city include the major port and the Bakaara Market. At this market, visitors and locals alike can purchase a variety of local specialties, such as squid, lobster, bananas, and papayas. Another interesting city in Somalia is Hargeisa, where visitors can explore the regional museum or view the ancient cave paintings of Laas Geel.
Thanks to its location on the coast of the Indian Ocean, Somalia also boasts some of the continent’s most beautiful beaches. The Somali coastline not only offers ideal swimming conditions but also excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving, thanks to the impressive coral reefs that lie just off the coast and rank among the most beautiful in the world.
Location and Climate
Somalia is a coastal state on the Indian Ocean in the Horn of Africa. It shares land borders with Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia.
Somalia has a tropical climate, with consistently high temperatures year-round. The climate is shaped by two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. The first dry season begins in December and ends in March, followed by the main rainy season, which gives way to a second dry season from July to September. The second rainy season, from October to November, is significantly shorter.
Temperatures in Somalia can reach up to 42°C. In the cooler season, they drop to around 28°C. Only in the mountainous regions is it slightly cooler, and the coastal areas are also more pleasant due to the monsoon winds.
Entry and Travel
The international airport in Somalia is located about five kilometers from the city center of the capital. There are no direct flights from Germany to Somalia, so a flight from Frankfurt requires two stopovers. After landing in Mogadishu, onward travel is possible by local taxis. Somalia can also be reached by car from some neighboring countries, as there are several border crossings. However, Somalia’s road network is in very poor condition.
Due to the current situation, entry into Somalia is not possible for tourists. As a result, German nationals are not permitted to enter the country due to the high risk of kidnapping, and the German authorities may accordingly restrict passports. This high risk of kidnapping applies to all Western nationals in Somalia.
