Highlights in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is famed for its pristine white sand beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. The country also offers excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities, particularly around the Banana Islands.
The capital, Freetown, lies on the Freetown Peninsula. The landscape here ranges from forested hills to dense woodland and the Atlantic coastline. Freetown is also home to many cultural attractions, such as St. John’s Maroon Church (1829), the Foulah Town Mosque (1830) and St. George’s Cathedral (1828). One of the city’s most famous landmarks is a giant cotton tree that has stood in the city centre since 1787.
In addition, Outamba-Kilimi National Park offers the chance to see rare large mammals in their natural habitat. The park is home to elephants, giraffes, lions, African buffalo and pygmy hippos.

Getting to and around Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone’s international airport, Lungi International Airport, lies around 13 kilometres from the capital Freetown. However, since the airport is on the opposite side of the Sierra Leone River, visitors must take a ferry or helicopter to reach the city. It is also possible to travel to Freetown by bus, though the journey takes around four hours. Driving is another option, but some roads into the country may be closed, so tourists should check the current political situation before travelling.
German travellers need a passport valid for at least six months beyond their arrival date and a visa to enter Sierra Leone. The visa must be applied for in advance at the Sierra Leonean embassy in Berlin. All visitors must also present proof of a valid yellow fever vaccination, except for infants under nine months old.
