The majority of Niger’s population, around 94 percent, adheres to Islam. Christians and animists in the country represent the religious minority. The population of the Republic of Niger is composed of various ethnic groups. The largest include the Djerma, the Hausa, the Tuareg, the Fulani (Peulh), and the Kanouri. Due to this cultural diversity, Niger is home to a variety of languages, such as Djerma, Hausa, Tamasheq, and Fulfulde. French is also the country’s official language.

Sights in Niger

One of the country’s impressive sights is the city of Agadez. This is an important desert city, characterized by numerous mud-brick structures, including the 27-metre-high minaret of the mosque.

Other notable sights in Niger include the Aïr Mountains. This range, which reaches heights of around 2,000 metres, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. Also part of this natural heritage is the Ténéré Desert, which offers visitors dinosaur fossil sites, kilometre-long sand dunes, and oases. Tourists can explore this desert by camel or 4x4 vehicle. Desert tours can be booked for several days or even weeks.

Location and Climate of Niger

Niger is a landlocked country bordered by Libya, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Chad, Mali, Benin, and Nigeria. Much of Niger’s land area is covered by deserts, including the Ténéré Desert, the country’s largest, which lies in the centre of the country alongside the Aïr Mountains. To the east are the Kaouar and Sahara desert regions, while the southern part of the country is part of the Sahel belt. Further west, the Niger River, a 650-kilometre-long river, flows through the region, making it the country’s only fertile plain.

Niger has a continental-Saharan climate with distinct rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season lasts from around June to October, bringing heavy rainfall and high temperatures, making the air very humid. From October to June, the weather is hot and dry, with temperatures reaching up to 48 degrees Celsius.

Entry and Travel to Niger

Niger’s international airport is located about twelve kilometres from the capital, Niamey. Direct flights to Niamey are available from Europe, for example, from airports in Paris or London. After arriving at Niamey Airport, travellers can continue to their accommodation by taxi or bus. It is also possible to enter the country by car, using border roads from neighbouring countries.

German tourists require a valid passport and a visa to enter Niger. When applying for a visa, travellers must already specify through which border crossing they will enter the country, as this must be noted on the visa. All visitors must also provide proof of a valid yellow fever vaccination. This requirement does not apply to children under one year of age.
