The Republic of Liberia is located in West Africa and covers a total area of 111,370 square kilometers.

Liberia’s population is made up of people of diverse ethnic origins, including members of 16 major tribes such as the Mano, Kpelle, Kissi, Loma, and Mandingo. English serves as the official language and main lingua franca in Liberia. In addition, the 16 tribes in the country also speak various indigenous languages. Around 40% of Liberia’s population primarily follows Christianity. Animist and Muslim communities also reside in the country.

Attractions in Liberia

The capital, Monrovia, is a draw for both locals and tourists thanks to its vibrant and colorful urban life, numerous restaurants, nightclubs, and cafés. Near Monrovia, there are also many fine Atlantic beaches, such as St. Martins Beach and Silver Beach. However, the country’s best beaches are located near Robertsport.

For many visitors, the Sapo National Park is one of the country’s top attractions. This national park protects a large expanse of pristine rainforest, home to animals such as leopards, forest elephants, and pygmy hippos.

Location and Climate of Liberia

Liberia is situated in West Africa on the Atlantic coast, bordered by Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone. The country’s Atlantic coastline stretches approximately 579 kilometers. Much of Liberia’s landscape consists of highlands reaching up to 500 meters in elevation. The coastal area, by contrast, is flat and gives way to a high plateau largely covered by rainforest.

Liberia has a tropical rainforest climate, with a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from December to March. Temperatures remain consistent year-round, averaging around 25°C. During the rainy season, heavy rainfall is common, and tornadoes frequently occur. The coastal region receives the most rain. In the dry season, the Harmattan wind brings hot, dusty air.

Arrival and Entry

Liberia’s international airport, Roberts International Airport, is located about 60 kilometers from the capital. Direct flights to Liberia, for example from Brussels Airport, are available. From the airport, buses and taxis can be used for onward travel. The country can also be reached by car via the borders with Ivory Coast or Guinea. However, road travel is not advisable during the rainy season due to flooded roads.

German nationals can enter Liberia with a valid passport and a visa, which must be obtained prior to travel. The passport must remain valid for at least six months upon entry. Since Liberia is considered a yellow fever risk area, all travelers over one year of age must provide proof of a valid yellow fever vaccination. During their stay in Liberia, both US dollars and Liberian dollars can be used, as both currencies are legal tender in the country. There are also quantitative restrictions on the import of cash.
