Highlights of Guinea

Guinea’s highlights include its diverse natural landscapes. In the Forest Guinea region, for example, guided rainforest hikes can be taken through the habitat of forest elephants. In Forest Guinea, there are significantly more opportunities to observe the forest elephants that live there than in other African countries. Primary rainforest can be found in Boussou. This rainforest is home to many wild chimpanzees, which can also be spotted on one of the guided hikes. At 1,752 metres, Mount Nimba is the highest point in Guinea. This mountain can be climbed in a 4-hour trek.

In the north of the country, in the region around the Fouta Djallon plateau, there are many hiking opportunities in a varied landscape of hills, mountains and farmland. This region is considered the best hiking area in all of West Africa. Unlike many other areas, visitors to the Fouta Djallon plateau have the opportunity to explore the nature on their own. Guided hikes are also possible upon request.

In the capital Conakry, there are not many sights apart from the National Museum and the Grande Mosquée, but Conakry is a lively city with many restaurants and live music.

Location and Climate of Guinea

Guinea is located in West Africa and shares borders with Liberia to the south, Sierra Leone to the southwest, Ivory Coast to the east, Guinea-Bissau to the northwest and the countries Mali and Senegal to the north. In addition, Guinea borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west, with a coastline of around 300 kilometres.

Guinea has a humid tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 20 to over 30 degrees Celsius. In the coastal region, the climate is humid and hot all year round, with consistent temperatures between 24 and 32 degrees, heavy rainfall and high humidity of up to 98%. The most pleasant temperatures in Guinea are typically experienced from around December to April.

The climate in Guinea is determined by the rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season lasts from April to November and the dry season from November to April. During this time, there are often strong storms and thunderstorms. In the rainforest areas in the south of the country, the rainy season can begin as early as February.

Entry and Arrival

Guinea’s international airport, Conakry G’bessia, is located about 13 kilometres from the capital Conakry. This airport can be reached directly from Paris by flight. From the airport, onward travel is possible by taxi. Some land borders can also be crossed by car. However, Guinea’s taxis only go as far as the border; crossing the border by taxi is not possible.

German nationals require a passport in conjunction with a valid visa to enter Guinea. Children also require a child’s passport and a visa for entry. As Guinea is a yellow fever risk area, all travellers aged one year and older must also provide proof of a valid yellow fever vaccination.
